The Juvenile Crime Prevention Program, where Crime Prevention Starts! In response to the growing concern over juvenile crime, CEO/Founder of The Juvenile Crime Prevention Program, Mr. Roman, proposes a simple and unique approach to juvenile crime prevention: provide at-risk youths with an opportunity to see the possible outcomes for the choices they make and the road they choose to take. These possible roads are shown to the youth through the tours they take. They are taken on tours to correctional facilities, as well as universities and colleges. They are provided with the ability to compare both lifestyles through the experience of a first-hand visit. These visits will allow them to see the potential in their lives, and hopefully lead them on the right road. A visit to our program that is headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland would provide an opportunity to thoroughly review the program components and the parties involved. Mr. Roman has started a filming project to show what has led him to this point with the program. He remains very active and is directly involved in all aspects of the program. The core of the Juvenile Crime Prevention Program is to select age-appropriate peer mentor/role models to interact with at-risk youths. Mr. Roman believes inner city at-risk youth do not relate well with the older generation. Therefore, the program provides at-risk youth with an opportunity to interact with other young people who are actively involved in positive and productive behavior, such as attending college, working, interning, developing skill sets, becoming entrepreneurs, pursuing their interests, and laying the groundwork for their lives. By introducing at-risk youth to other young people who are being productive and positive, the Juvenile Crime Prevention Program will help stimulate an awareness of what is possible. Mr. Roman suggests that selecting the right peer mentor is the most important factor of the program. These peer mentor/role models need to be able to communicate well and truly relate to the youth. They are instrumental in providing the youth with a new way of seeing life and what they can accomplish their own lives. Juvenile Crime Prevention, Treatment and Control Panel The Juvenile Crime Prevention Program has joined forces two other local programs: the YES Program, directed by Ms. Elaine Lee and Believe Movement (a city program), to form a support panel on Juvenile Crime Prevention, Treatment and Control. The panel will consider both juvenile offending patterns and intervention options from a developmental perspective. The panel will meet six times quarterly and hold at least three annual workshops. Further, the panel will visit facilities and observe their programs for juvenile offenders. The goals of the panel are to:
- Examine causes and pathways to juvenile crime and violence
- Assess the literature and data on the strengths and weaknesses of the juvenile justice system as an intervention and control process
- Examine the nature of the youth population within the juvenile justice system
- Assess the literature on the short and long-term effects of waiving juvenile cases to adult court
- Focus on what is known about the deterrent effects of harsher dispositions on youthful criminality
Summary The goal of the Juvenile Crime Prevention Program is to provide at-risk youth with the opportunity to see that there are more options available to them than life on the streets and in prison. The vehicle for providing them with these opportunities is through touring various facilities, educational institutes, museum tours, and additional culturally enlightening venues. While on these tours, the youth will interact with other young people who will provide positive role models. They will be provided with a learning experience to help them make the right choices with their lives. In doing so, juvenile crime will decrease. Most significantly, we want our youth to know what their unique purpose is and the true value of their life.
